Get to Know Your Plumbing System

Plumbing Solutions of Idaho expert tips

If there’s one system in every home that takes constant use and abuse, it’s the plumbing system. But for many homeowners, it’s also a system shrouded in mystery. Many homeowners aren’t sure how their systems work and certainly don’t know how to repair any damage or replace parts. In fact, many people aren’t aware that the gas lines in their home technically count as part of the plumbing system, meaning that the system itself involves more than just running water.

TLC 101 for Your Home Plumbing System

It’s important to understand some of the basics of plumbing when you become a homeowner and to make sure that your system is well taken care of. Here are a few ways you can make sure your plumbing system is in tip-top shape.

  1. Do some research: At the very least, you should take a moment to find out where the pipes, shut-off valves, and water heater of your system are in your home. This way, you’ll be sure to avoid hurting any of these parts while doing home renovations. It’s also important to understand how to turn off your home’s water in case of a plumbing emergency.
  2. Keep an eye out for leaks: Leaks are a huge problem when they occur, especially because water can cause mold and severe damage to your home. An easy way to check routinely for leaks in your system is to find and understand your home’s water meter. If the number is higher in the morning when no one has used the water system much than it is when everyone has showered, there’s a chance you’re dealing with a leak somewhere.
  3. Take care of your water heater: Your water heater is an essential part of your plumbing system, and it’s important to check your hot water tank every six months or so for efficiency and leaking. If you’re concerned that your hot water tank is old, inefficient, or in need of repair, contact a trusted local plumber.
