Choosing the Right Water Heater

Plumbing Solutions of Idaho expert tips

As Boise gets through this cold winter, the last thing you want to worry about is your water heater. If you are concerned about the efficiency of your water heater, there are signs to look for that point to troubleIf you have found that it is time to replace your water heater, the following steps will assure that you find exactly what you are looking for.

  1. Fuel Type: First, identify what type of fuel you would like to use based on what is available. The three fuel types are natural gas, propane, and electric.
  2. Storage Capacity: Second, determine your storage capacity. Tank water heaters and tankless units require different information to decide what water heater will work best for your home. Because a tank system holds continuously heated water, you will need to base your storage capacity on the number of bathrooms and bedrooms in your home. 1 to 2 bedrooms will require around 30 gallons. For a tankless unit that heats water as it is needed, you will need to calculate gallons per minute of hot water. Assessing the various appliances used throughout your house and calculate the frequency at which you use them at the same time.
  3. Heater Function: Lastly, decide if you need a whole house system or a point of use system. A whole house system will distribute hot water throughout your home while a point of use system is for instant hot water in an isolated area. Point-o- use systems will benefit a larger building that has issues with waiting for warm water.

The options for a new water heater are plenty. If you are unsure of what system will work best for your home, give us call.
