Avoid Frozen Pipes During Snowmageddon

Plumbing Solutions of Idaho expert tips

Boise has had a record amount of snow this season with more on the way. Many people have had to take into consideration how their homes are being affected and what will come when all the snow melts. While most affected areas are visible, don’t forget about your plumbing. The new snow and freezing temperatures can create problems for plumbing all over the city of Boise.

The most common plumbing problem due to winter weather is frozen pipes. The pipes that exist throughout our house usually go unnoticed even though we use them every day. When something like a frozen pipe occurs, it can be very frustrating and time-consuming. There are steps that can be taken to prevent frozen pipes and, if needed solutions to fixing a frozen pipe.

Prevention: Exposed pipes are the most susceptible to becoming frozen. Once you know that freezing weather is coming, begin to trickle water through the faucet. Allow warmer air to circulate pipes by keeping cabinets in the kitchen and bathroom open. Aside from the area directly around the pipes, keep the thermostat at a consistent temperature, never below 55 degrees especially if you will be away for an extended period.

Solution: If you go to turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, you can guess a pipe has frozen. In this case, keep the faucet open. Once it has thawed water will begin to pour out. If you can locate the pipe, you can apply heat via a heating pad or electric blow dryer. If you are unable to find the frozen pipe or thaw it on your own, call a plumber.

Boise was not expecting a severe winter, and it has sent many into a scramble for shovels, ice melt, and other supplies. Plumbers will also continue to be in high demand. A few prevention steps can help your home run smoothly. You can not foresee all events, so if you have found yourself with a frozen pipe, contact us.
