​In 1975, the National Appliance Energy Conservation Act–NAECA–was enacted, establishing a pattern of guidelines and measurements for ensuring that home appliances are as environmentally friendly as possible. It is the basis upon which today’s energy-conscious, money-saving, environment-protecting appliances were designed. Of course, we’ve come a long way since 1975; our modern idea of “going green” is a lot bigger and more ambitious than it was in the past–and the NAECA has stepped up to meet it, especially where it comes to water heater compliance. As of April 16, 2015, all water heaters must meet a set of new and improved standards that demand higher levels of efficiency and lower levels of environmental impact.

• “Grandfathered in.” Any water heaters purchased, installed, or manufactured before the new NAECA guidelines were released are being grandfathered in–that is to say, they do not necessarily have to be replaced or removed. The guidelines mostly focus on models manufactured after April 16, 2015, and don’t affect your current water heater.
• Replacement. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more efficient water heater, the NAECA guideline changes mean that every new model will be environmentally friendly, energy-conscious, and friendly to your wallet in the long run. You don’t have to replace your water heater–but why not do it now, when new and efficient systems are so easily accessed?
