DIY or Call a Plumber?

Plumbing Solutions of Idaho expert tips

Knowing when to do-it-yourself and when to hire a professional plumber is a fine line, indeed. Your practical side says it’s best to at least try to take care of it yourself in order to save money. But then there’s the side that’s a little less confident and it’s saying, “What if I cause a bigger problem and end up spending more money in the long run?” We feel your pain! Here are a few tips to know when to get out your wrench, and when to get out your phone.

Be Honest With Yourself

Let’s face it. We’re all good at something, but maybe that something isn’t plumbing. If you’re the kind of guy who’s built or remodeled your own home, including the plumbing, then you’re in good shape when it comes to handling your own home plumbing repairs. But if you’d rather get a root canal than crank a wrench around a pipe, then it’s probably a good idea to give a professional plumber a call when things go awry with your home plumbing system. Then again, there are some plumbing jobs that almost anyone can handle. The key is knowing when you’ve got yourself backed into a corner so you can call for help before the situation gets out of control.

You’ve Got This One!

Here are a couple of jobs that don’t usually require a professional plumber:

  • Clogged drains. Tackling a slow drain before a major clog develops is the best way to handle this problem, and a plunger or plumbing auger can take care of most clogged drains.
  • Leaky faucets. Some basic plumbing tools and a willingness to read (and follow) the directions should help you gain victory over a simple leaky faucet.

At the end of the day, if the drain is still clogged, the faucet is still leaking, or the water heater has let you down again, give us a call in Boise at Plumbing Solutions of Idaho. We’ll be happy to help!
