What Causes a Sudden Drop in Water Pressure?

A sudden drop in water pressure can be concerning, but some of the many causes can be fixed at home without the need of a professional. Before you call the plumbers at Plumbing Solutions of Idaho, try these simple troubleshooting tips:

​Check Your Water Pressure

• ​Find out if all of your faucets have low water pressure. Run water in all faucets and showers to determine if the problem is isolated or widespread. Run both hot and cold water–if the pressure is low only with hot water, the problem might be your hot water shut-off valve on your water heater. Ensure the valve is completely open. If the problem persists, call a plumber to check your water heater.
• If the problem is isolated, the culprit is usually a clog. Remove the faucet, checking for debris or buildup. You can clean the aerator in a solution of water and vinegar, or buy an inexpensive replacement if needed. Before replacing the aerator, check the water flow. If the pressure is still low, there may be a different source of the problem.

*To look for a different source, check the PRV and water shut-off valves. Check for water leaks in places like toilets or the water main.

• The PRV is typically found on the line where it enters your home. Adjust it to see if it affects the water pressure. Replace it if necessary.
• The shutoff valve is typically located near the PRV or the water meter. Ensure that the valve is completely open.

*If the pressure is not restored after these steps, you may need to contact a plumber to fix a water leak or to clear mineral build-up.

​Check for Water Leaks

• Check all the toilets in your home. Remove the lid and drop a few drops of water coloring in the tank. Do not flush for one hour, and then check to see if the color has leaked into the bowl. If it has, you have a leak. Try replacing the toilet flapper or filling mechanism.
• Check your service meter to determine if you have a service line leak.
• Check for water spots in your basement or crawl space and near water fixtures.
