Drain Clogs: Causes & Prevention

Plumbing Solutions of Idaho expert tips

If you have had any level of responsibility in an apartment or house, whether a rental or your own home, you have likely dealt with a clogged drain. It is a common frustration, and most people try to go at the problem with a reliable Internet DIY like mixing some common household items and pouring them down the drain, using Drano, or employing a drain snake. While these options can absolutely produce a positive outcome, some homeowners, and amateur drain fixers find that a particular drain or system seems to keep getting clogged without a simple explanation.

Detecting a Bigger Problem

When you’re dealing with a plumbing issue, it’s nice to be able to distinguish a normally clogged drain and the potential for a bigger problem. Here are a few things to look out for in your plumbing:

  • the appearance or increase of dirt or rust in water
  • air bubble bursts in water lines
  • bad smells coming from tap water or toilet bowl water

Any of these could be indications of a bigger problem than a simple clogged drain; you wouldn’t believe the things we find in people’s drains, and sometimes they have been there a lot longer than you would imagine. Not only can random items get stuck (even a rubber ducky could cause mayhem), but tree roots can cause clogs, buildup does happen, and sewers can break or collapse. To make sure that there isn’t something serious going on with your plumbing, feel free to contact us to describe your situation; we may be able to lend some insight into your problem.
